Colorado National Speedway Low-Speed Autocross

This combined club (DCA DtRC) hosted event was held at the Colorado National Speedway. CNS is a 3/8 mile paved oval used for stock car racing including figure 8's. The track was laid out such that we were able to do 2-1/2 complete laps with a finish in the infield consisting of several tight switch backs. As one car entered the infield section off the oval where the finish lights were set up, the next car was released down the front straightaway. Drivers had to slow down on the both straights to negotiate a tight a slalom course. Loads of second gear fun! It got up to 95 degrees and some of the cars, especially C3's, had some overheating issues, but nothing that kept them from running. The event was well managed, although we were only able to complete 2 runs in the afternoon due to time constraints dictated by the CNS track management. When else you get the opportunity to run your vette on an oval track? (and the ladies appreciated the availability of actual flushing toilets for once, without having to share a porta john with the men).

Pete U. of DCA trailered his modified C4 to the event and turned the OFTD of the morning autocross (and group 2). TORCA's Vernon R. responded in the afternoon session by turning the best time of the day and for group 1. Vern won his class in the morning, as did many of the other TORCA drivers. Becky K. burned the banking to get OFTD for the Ladies in both sessions. The C5 Z06 traveling hat (a challenge created between Roger, Ken and Mike at the first autox of the season) was passed from Mike to Ken after the afternoon sessions. Mike had Group 1 FTD in the morning, but was bested by Vernon's sizzling performance in the afternoon. Other TORCA members participating were Curt, Chuck and Susan, Matthew, Ryan, Cheryl, Don and Cindy, Jackie, David and Kris. Roger's son co-drived his Z06 and his daughter in law joined hime on his attempts. This was David's 1st autox and his times and confidence improved as the day went on. His wife Kris is now motivated to try it as well. A 2-car father and son (Bob and Lee) from Denver and Pueblo were embraced by the TORCA group and are considering membership. Everyone's outgoing friendship and helpfulness is a great asset to the club.
